High Performance Teams
Whether a competition Stunt Rider or a Business Owner, superior results are the result of high performance teams. This comes about from planning, effort and discipline.
High Performance Teams share a common vision and goals. They work together, and hold each other accountable to achieve outstanding results.
The Problem
As an individual or small team, you produce products and services in a highly competitive and highly regulated market without the necessary resources to help you ‘grow’ your business. In the blink of an eye one day runs into the next, and you find you’re being stretched in all directions. You start to prioritise urgent demands from non-urgent in order to meet deadlines. Before you know it, your time is spent managing ‘tasks’ rather than setting direction and transforming into a more profitable business.
The Remedy
As a business owner how can you find the time to re-organise your business to become a high-performance team? It’s easy when you know how, right? At a high level it is, the key is to plan and be disciplined.
Without going into details consider:
- Plan: Identify the activities, commitments and resources you need to generate your required revenue.
- Delegate: Be disciplined to change from your ‘hands on’ management style to identify those in your team capable to take on extra responsibilities.
- Train: Provide necessary training to the team to ensure competency.
- Step Back: Don’t ‘micro-manage’. Promote positive relationships. Allow your team to perform their new tasks and responsibilities and freely report to you on their progress.
- Oversee: Become a strategist utilising a ‘big picture’ perspective.
- Consult: Communicate as a team, identify problems and always seek feedback for improvement to strategy and work processes.
- Monitor & Review: Monitor progress, critique performance and review changes to action plans.
- Measure & Report: Set goals with clear measures, evaluate performance, and report results to the team.
To achieve all this takes good planning, time management, communication and organisational skills. As well, it takes a Manager who has confidence in his / her team.
This may all seem simplistic and impossible to achieve, but in reality we already do it as we move into different positions of responsibility, and from company to company throughout our careers. As business owners, we need to realise alone we cannot perform everything required in our businesses all of the time.
Results & benefits businesses will usually achieve:
- Improved skills and capabilities through investment in its human resources.
- Formalised organisational design and documented responsibilities and accountabilities.
- Improved planning, communication and reporting activities.
- More clarity in decision making.
- A transition from reactive to preventive management.
- Assured strategic planning outcomes.
- Decreased errors and incidents.
- Improved efficiencies and increased profits.
- A ‘culture’ of cohesiveness amongst employees.
